Message from Your Personal Singing Coach:

“Welcome all fellow singers, vocal coaches and singing students!

Happy April Fools’ Day! Hope u all had a fun time playing tricks on each other! ;-p

The past few weeks have been very enriching and busy for me, as I have been really busy with work, handling many events as well as school programs.

I have also been working on my singing and upgrading my knowledge about how to teach singing.

It certainly has been an eye opener for me to have found Estill Voice International, and also having attended one of their workshops in Sydney, Australia.

It really opened my eyes to a whole new world of singing, and also brought my understanding of the voice to a whole new level.

I will slowly be introducing some of these elements into my website, but I will do it in a way that is more understandable for beginner readers, so as not to confuse everyone!

I certainly hope that you will benefit from my new found knowledge, and hopefully when you do achieve success in your singing, don’t forget to let me know!

Also, I would like to ask that you join Your Personal Singing Guide’s Facebook Group
(http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=161546608524&ref=ts)

, and get your friends to join too. Help me to spread the word to everyone in the world, so that my website can begin to touch lives that I can’t even begin to imagine right now!

Do enjoy the tips that I am providing for you in this 25th issue of this Ezine, and feel free to share Your Personal Singing Ezine with your friends and loved ones, or better still, get them to come and subscribe to their very own Personal Singing Ezine! I will be glad to share my singing tips and pointers with them too!

If you wish to share with your friends the back-issues of our Ezine, feel free to do so too:

Also, if you feel that our website is really beneficial to you, please do let us know by dropping us an email through our Contact Us section on the website! Your comments will be greatly appreciated!”

RESOURCE Webpage: Vocal Warmups

Vocal Warmups are more important to our voice than we think, as it helps us to stretch out our vocals before we actually do sing.

Singing is somewhat like running a marathon, or at least, a 10 km distance.

It requires stamina, training, and also knowing what you are doing, and not pushing yourself over the limit.

We do certainly need to do warmups before running such a long distance, and so singing is no exception.

So make sure you stretch out your voice well so that you will be able to reach the notes that you want when you sing!

To know more about what Vocal Warmups you can do before singing, please check out the chapter below:

RESOURCE Website Section: Ear Training

Our ears are vital to us when we sing, much like how our legs are important to us when we walk or run.

Without our ears, we will not be able to sing well! We can test this out by singing while we are listening to music with headphones.

You will find that your pitching will be all over the place, and you will not be able to carry a tune if you cannot hear yourself sing!

Such an important aspect of our singing should of course be given more attention, and there should be ear training done to improve on our aural awareness!

After all, we need all our senses when we sing, not just our voice, but also our ears, our mind, our body and our entire spirit and energy.

Vocal Tip #27 – Sirening your way to a Connected Voice

Here’s another lovely vocal exercise that you can do to achieve a smooth and connected voice, and also to explore your entire vocal range.

Start off with a very soft sound, sung on a ‘ng’ syllable, much like humming, and starting on a comfortable high note that you can sustain.

Be sure not to use too much force or breath, but just to let the sound be soft but not breathy, and sustain it very lightly and comfortably.

Once you are able to do this, bring it from the high note down towards your lowest comfortable note.

Make sure that you siren through all the pitches, and feel how your voice ‘changes’ as it moves from a high pitch to your low pitches.

It should feel something like driving a car, moving from a high gear (5th gear) to a low gear (1st gear).

The car actually does get lighter as it goes up towards the higher gears, and your voice will experience this feeling too!

Once you are able to do this, and your voice feels smooth and connected, you can try going from a low note to a high note.

This would be slightly more difficult, and more prone to over-pushing or using too much breath to reach for the high notes.

Check out the URL below if you wish to read about other vocal exercises on Achieving a Connected Voice:

Just make sure that you move your tone from a solid and heavier sound, to a lighter but still not breathy sound.

And along the way, if you encounter any chinks or breaks, do make sure you start slightly lower, and try to work through them lightly with the ‘ng’ syllable, humming your way up and down until you know how to sing through the breaks.

Pitching Tip #23 – Taking the Effort to Reach the Notes

Most of the time when we are unable to reach notes that we want to sing, it is probably due to the fact that we do not put in enough effort.

This effort has to be applied in a variety of ways, in order for us to be able to hit the right notes.

Firstly, we have to put in effort in practicing our singing, and familiarizing with our own voice.

Knowing how our voice sounds like when we sing low notes, high notes, and also notes in the middle, does help in our overall sense of pitch and tune.

I have a student who is unable to tell the difference between a low octave and a high octave, and I get him to try songs that have a wide range, just so that he can understand how it sounds like.

Secondly, we need to also put in effort in listening when we sing, and knowing whether we are off pitch or not.

This means that we first have to be able to know how to listen out for whether we singing off pitch or not, and this can be done with some listening exercises.

Check out the URL below for listening exercises that you can practise with:

Ear Training URL:

http://www.your-personal-singing-guide.com/ear-training.html

For our learning purposes, you can focus more on the Absolute and Relative Pitch, and understand more about that.

Thirdly, you will also need to put in more effort in reaching for the high notes, which usually tends to be the problem when people sing.

This can be done by making sure that you practise various vocal exercises, and also try out the sirening exercise that i introduced in the tip above.

That exercise allows u to reach for high notes and basically your entire range, in a safe and easy way.

But you have to take the effort to practise correctly and diligently, so as to be able to allow your muscles to remember how to hit those notes!

Know that you can always push hard to reach high notes, but that may cause your throat and your voice to feel tired or hurt later on.

So, be patient and be safe, and always practise singing correctly and diligently to achieve the right results.
