Message from Your Personal Singing Coach:

“Welcome all fellow singers and singing students!

I hope that everyone has recovered from Post-Olympics withdrawal symptoms, and that we have regained our usual everyday activities!

This 5th issue of Your Personal Singing Ezine will continue to guide you towards improving your singing through simple yet useful training tips.

I have also featured some sections of the website which i feel are important to all singers, and it will be good for everyone to revisit these topics once in a while.

One of these sections is an early section on the Basics of Singing, where I highlight the 5 basic tenets of singing and how important they are.

Basics of Singing URL:

For those of you who missed out on our previous Ezine issues, you can always revisit these back-issues at the following URL:

I also have a surprise coming up in store for everyone, when i will finally unveil information about myself as well as where I am based, and also some of my personal performance videos.

This is because I have received requests from many people asking if I can coach them in their countries, and I have had to reply them individually on this.

So, for those who are curious as to who I am and how I am helping people to sing better everyday, do stay tuned to subsequent issues of the Ezine, and keep checking out our website for updates!

I will of course be putting up more new topics each month, so do keep coming back to revisit the important topics and also to check for new ones on our website.

P.S: Feel free to share Your Personal Singing Ezine with your friends, or better still, get them to come and subscribe to their very own Personal Singing Ezine! I will be glad to share my singing tips and pointers with them too!

Also, if you feel that our website is really beneficial to you, please do let us know by dropping us an email through our Contact Us section on the website! Your comments are greatly appreciated!”

Traffic is growing at Your Personal Singing Guide Website!

o Many thanks to our supporters and friends who have helped to spread the news of our website to everyone who loves singing or who would like to learn singing!

I am very glad that my website has reached out to many people in the world, and continues to reach out to more and more people everyday.

Many people ask me why I choose to write out all my vocal teaching secrets and tips on a free website, allowing so many people to possibly copy and use them for whatever means they wish.

My answer to this question is that I wish to pass my knowledge on to anyone who is willing to learn, and also possibly leave an online legacy that will live on even after I am gone.

Life is so very short, and I have learnt that very recently through my experience with the death of a close friend. This has further strengthened my wish to allow more people access to my vocal teaching secrets, so that everyone can benefit from my knowledge about singing.

So, do continue to help us out by spreading news about our website to more people in the world, by starting first with your immediate friends and loved ones, teaching them to love singing, and also cherishing them while they are still in your life.

FEATURED Website Section: Pitching Exercises!

o Here you will find many pitching exercises that most professional vocal coaches would use to train their students and keep them singing in tune.

At least I find that they are useful whenever I coach my students, and many of my students have also improved when using these exercises in their daily training sessions.

Many of these exercises are also actually musical scales that we would learn in a formal music education, just that we are applying them now to our singing and using them to train our pitching.

This also shows that by improving our musical knowledge, we would definitely be equipped with more skills to improve our everyday singing too!

FEATURED Website Section: Basics of Singing!

o Don’t neglect your basics. It is very important for us to constantly revisit our basics for singing so that we develop a good and strong foundation for singing.

Basics like Pitch, Rhythm, Voice, Breath and Diction are always applicable to our everyday vocal training, and also very important for every song that we sing.

In fact, these form the basis for many of the pitching and vocal training exercises that we vocal coaches give our students in order to target the problem areas in singing.

So, it definitely will not hurt for you to revisit this website section and to find out more about these basics of singing, as well as how to improve each and every one of them.

Vocal Training Tip #7 – Sustaining Your Voice: A Test of Your Breath Stability

During my recent lessons with students, I discovered that many of them are unable to sustain their voices for a long duration, and they are also unable to keep their voices stable for the duration of the sustained note.

Vocal sustain is actually a measure of how stable our breath support is, as well as how well we can control our breath and our voice to produce a strong and stable tone.

For those who wish to read up on some basics about how to train our vocal sustain, you can refer to the website URL stated below.

Vocal Sustain URL:

http://www.your-personal-singing-guide.com/singing-exercises.html

For those who have read the above section, you can try out another vowel – ‘Eeh’ – when training your vocal sustain.

Using the ‘eeh’ vowel will be able to help you to hit the high notes easier, because this vowel tends towards a higher vocal placement, and most people will be able to sing higher by using this vowel in their training sessions.

Do bear in mind that when you are sustaining your singing, you should try to keep your abdominal area slightly tensed and focus on keeping your waist area expanded, and not let it collapse inwards too quickly.

This will help you to train the abdominal and diaphragm strength necessary to be able to develop good breath support in order to sustain your notes properly.

For those who wish to revisit some basic breathing exercises, do check out the URL below for the topic on ‘Breathing Exercises’.

Breathing Exercises URL:

Now, one more tip for those looking to develop a good vocal sustain. The trick is to keep your mouth, jaw, tongue and chin relaxed when holding the long note that you have to sing.

If for any reason these parts of your anatomy are not relaxed, you will find that they will move ever so slightly and cause your voice to waver or shake, creating a less than stable vocal sustain.

You should also try to ‘lock’ your voice in one position, and not shift it high or low when you are doing the vocal sustain exercises. Shifting the vocal position will result in differences in tone, creating a shaky vocal sustain.

Ok, keep practising, and do email me if you have any questions regarding this topic!

Pitching Training Tip #5 – Humming To Cure Tone Deafness

Throughout my many years as a vocal instructor, I have discovered that many of my students come to me claiming to be tone deaf, or claiming to have terrible pitching sense.

Some truly do have bad pitching, but many of them are only suffering from a mild case of pitching problem, and they can be cured by using a simple and useful technique called ‘Humming’!

Yes, it is that simple! I have cured many students of their supposed tone deafness, just by getting them to hum to the pitch that they are supposed to sing.

The way humming works is that it internalises the sound that we produce, so that we can hear ourselves humming with our internal hearing, and match this to the sound that we hear from our external environment.

Once we hear that the internal sound matches the external sound, we will then know that we are humming the correct pitch required, and can then open our mouths to sing that specific note.

For those who wish to read up more about Humming and how to do it correctly, check out the URL below.

Humming Exercise URL:

http://www.your-personal-singing-guide.com/humming.html

For those who have extreme pitch problems, this will be an extremely easy and effective way for you to improve your pitching, and to be able to achieve a most accurate sense of pitching almost instantly!

Unless of course you are truly tone deaf. In that case, I will be most unable to help you, because you would have totally no notion of high or low notes and sounds, and would be unable to tell if you are singing the right pitch or not, because you are unable to differentiate the various sounds and notes.

But, it is very rare to be truly tone deaf. It is almost as rare as striking the lottery or sweepstakes. So for those who think you are tone deaf, try this simple technique and see if you can improve your pitching instantly.

Let me know how your training goes, and email me to give me your valuable feedback!

Rhythm Training Tip #3 – Rhythm Accents While Singing

Many of us do not know that when we sing, we need to accent certain words in the song in order to bring out the meaning of the lyrics.

Also, we need to give special emphasis to those words because of the specific rhythm and beat of the song, so as to let our singing ‘sit in’ well with the music and the melody.

One common mistake among beginner singers would be to apply heavy accents to an excessive number of words, sometimes accenting all the words in a phrase, causing it to be too harsh and loud!

Usually we would only need to accent the 1st and/or 3rd beat of every bar in a 4 beat song, and accent the 1st beat of every bar in a 3 beat song.

This would be sufficient for us to be able to fit our singing well into the music and the rhythm of the song that we are singing.

We certainly do not need to accent every single word, because that would be too tiring to do and will tire out our voice very easily.

For those who wish to read up on the previous tips on rhythm training, you might wish to check out the back issues of this Personal Singing Ezine, especially the 3rd and 4th issues.
