Vocal Training Tip #1 – Humming Exercise!
There are many kinds of vocal warmups available to us, and I have mentioned 3 kinds on Your Personal Singing Guide Website.
Here, I will talk a bit more on Humming, and how it can help you with your voice training.
When we hum, we are able to find a better resonating position for us to sing from. Do make sure that when we hum, we should feel mild vibrations in our face area, and particularly at our teeth area. Our teeth should be gently vibrating when we do our humming exercises, as this is caused by the sound resonating in the front of our mouth.
Humming URL:
http://www.your-personal-singing-guide.com/humming.html
This will also help us to produce a brighter and more resonant humming sound, instead of a darker and duller sound if we were to hum from a lower position from the throat or the back of the mouth.
If you are unable to find the proper resonance, just say this word, “Hmm?”. Do it slowly and deliberately, and feel the pitch as well as vocal position move from a low to a higher position. Once you have achieved a higher vocal placement, keep that sensation and sustain a humming sound at that position. That should be a bright and forward humming position.
From this basic humming position, we can open our mouths and produce a bright and resonant sound, keeping the same vocal placement as we had when we were humming the notes or pitches we want.
Humming is also useful for those of us who are unable to do the lip trill, as i understand that some of us may have some difficulty mastering the basic lip trill exercise. Many of my students also have some difficulty in doing the lip trill, but this is usually overcome by their 2nd or 3rd lesson with me.
Lip Trill URL:

But for those who are still working on their lip trill and would like to have an exercise in the meantime to train their voice, then do practise the humming exercise, and make sure that your resonating position is in the front of your mouth and face, so that when you open your mouth to sing, your voice will be bright and wonderful!

Vocal Training Tip #2 – Vocal Exercises!
Your Personal Singing Guide has recently uploaded a brand new section on ‘Vocal Exercises’, and this section teaches everyone how to use specific and simple vocal exercises to achieve improvement in your singing power, vocal range, vocal flexibility and accuracy, vibrato, vocal sustain, as well as to achieve a smoother singing voice!
Some of these sections have specific vocal exercises uploaded for self-practice, whereas others refer to other sections in Your Personal Singing Guide. This is because for those topics, for example Singing Power, training this aspect of your singing voice involves many other basic skills in singing and being able to combine these skills well is crucial to achieving the improvement we want!
In order to achieve Singing Power, we need to be able to provide adequate breath support, so that our voice is able to rest on our breath and be projected outwards into our listening audience.
Breathing Exercises URL:
http://www.your-personal-singing-guide.com/breathing-exercises.html
Apart from this, we also need to train our vocal cords well, so that they are able to vibrate closely on the notes that we want to project, and they do not rip apart easily when we support our voice with more breath!
Vocal Cords URL:

Also, we need to work on releasing our jaw and throat for singing, and make sure we do not have any singing problems that will obstruct our voice as we project it outwards!
Singing Problems URL:
http://www.your-personal-singing-guide.com/singing-problem.html
So you see, some aspects of our vocal training do require the mastery of many different tools that we use in our singing, and this is why I do not recommend any single vocal exercise for these more challenging topics!
For those topics that are relatively direct and clear-cut, the specific exercises recommended should be able to achieve the desired improvements!
Try these vocal exercises out, and do give me some feedback if you wish to see more vocal exercises, and what other aspects of your singing voice you wish to work on!

Pitching Training Tip #1 – Singing Intervals with Songs!
Some of us may find some difficulty in practising pitch jumps, for example from Doh to Mi ( 1 3), or from Doh to Sol (1 5).
In this case, I have a solution that should be able to simplify things greatly for you, and make it so much easier for you to make the pitch jumps that you want!
Many of us would have grown up learning songs like Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, or watching Superman the Movie and listening to its theme songs. Well, we can use these songs to help us practise our singing intervals!
For example, the 1st 4 notes of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star would be Doh Doh Sol Sol (1 1 5 5), and this would help us to pitch the Doh-Sol (1 5) interval with great ease!
If this song does not help us (perhaps we do not listen to nursery rhymes), the Superman theme song also has a Doh-Sol interval for us to take reference to! The theme song i am referring to is the one played when Superman appears to save the day, or when the credits are rolling at the end of the movie.
I will be doing up a section on singing intervals soon on Your Personal Singing Guide Website, so be sure to check back regularly on this interesting topic!
You can also try to figure out songs for the rest of the intervals from Doh to Ti, and email me using the Contact Us page on our website! Your efforts will be greatly appreciated!
