Message from Your Personal Singing Coach:

“Welcome all fellow singers, vocal coaches and singing students!

It is a time for us Singaporeans to relax, because the June school holidays are here, and all the school students will have a month of rest from school! Hooray!

For everyone else in the world, I’m not sure if you also have this luxury, but I wish that you also enjoy the month of June, and keep practicing your singing.

I, for one, am going to take this opportunity to visit the country of Spain, and also visit my sister who lives in Madrid.

It will be such a lovely trip, and I am so looking forward to going there! And of course, being able to take a break from my work is just such a luxury for me.

I will still of course be in touch with everyone online, and will respond to your emails and comments when I am back in Singapore after the 18th of June.

In the meantime, here is this Ezine to keep you company during this month, and I hope you enjoy reading it.

Once again, I would also like to ask that we ask our friends and family members to also join Your Personal Singing Guide’s Facebook Fan Page

RESOURCE Webpage: Vocal Warmup

Vocal Warmups must be done daily, or at least certainly on a regular basis.

They should also be done each time before we do our singing training, and also before we do any singing performance or gig.

This chapter on Vocal Warmups will help us to familiarize ourselves with some of the more common and easy warmup exercises, and also provides you with some music resources for self practice.

Do practice with the music available in the section on ‘Scale Singing’, and make this a daily routine for you!

Check out the tips on Vocal Warmups now:

Vocal Mindset Tip #4 – The Importance of Daily Practice

A lot of singing students or budding singers only see the glamorous side of the singers on stage, the bright lights and the lovely performance attire!

They tend to forget that behind all that glamour, a lot of hard work has to be done too.

Behind each Korean boy band or girl group, there is certainly many months or even years of intensive rehearsals as well as strict dieting and other restrictions.

For those who wish to start with the very basics, check out the Basics of Singing below:

http://www.your-personal-singing-guide.com/basics-of-singing.html

There is a famous Chinese saying, “台上五分钟, 台下十年功!”

Basically it means that for a singer or performer to put up a good performance of just 5 minutes onstage, there could be up to 10 years of hard work that has to be put in first!

This saying is so true, and I am sure that many singers and performers will be nodding their heads in agreement.

To be able to sing a pop song well and in tune, and also to be able to emote the feelings in the lyrics, there are just so many things that have to be present.

The singer has to be have good musical ability and background, and this comes from many years of musical training and hard work.

Also, he or she has to be able to express their feelings in their voice, and to allow the listener/audience member to be able to relate to their singing and to the song.

This comes from many years of life experience, and also lots of vocal training in expression and intonation as well as pronunciation too.

Certainly, there are those performers who are just plain talented and are born with a wonderful singing voice with great expression.

But, these are few and far between. The main formula for success is still, HARD WORK!

This is why I have to stress again and again, Singing has to be practised on a daily basis.

Not just to build up the muscle memory that is necessary for us to be able to apply our singing practice to our singing performances.

But also to keep our voices active and maintain our discipline so that when Lady Luck comes knocking, we are ready to grasp the opportunity that is given to us!

So, keep up your singing practice, make sure we do our exercises and practices daily, and one day, the chance will come! And you will be ready. :-)

Train hard, train smart, and be ready! ;-p

Pitching Tip #34 – Why Do We Practise Singing Intervals?

One student of mine was working with me on some musical intervals, and he asked me, “Why do we practise singing these intervals?”

Now, before I answer this question, for those who are not sure what are musical intervals, you can check out the URL here:

http://www.your-personal-singing-guide.com/pitching-exercises-1.html

To answer my student’s question, I would just like to let everyone understand first that actually, a song is made up of many many musical intervals sung in succession.

Think about it. From the 1st note, to the next note, that in itself is one musical interval. And after that, another interval, and yet another.

A melody is actually a collection of pitches, and hence, a collection of musical intervals.

Of course, we don’t analyze every single musical interval that we sing, otherwise we might just go crazy just thinking about it!!

However, we might pay more attention to some special intervals that we sing.

For example, for the song ‘Somewhere over the Rainbow’, we might pay more attention to the word ‘Somewhere’, when we have to sing an octave interval.

Or, in the next sentence of this song, we would pay more attention to singing a Minor 6th interval for the first 2 words of the sentence. (“There’s a….”)

I could go on and on, but you get my drift.

This is where our musical interval singing practice comes into play. When we are familiar with the basic musical intervals, we will be able to make these pitch jumps when we are required to do so.

So, when we sing ‘Somewhere over the Rainbow’, we are able to make the octave jump in pitch with ease and familiarity, because we practice our intervals during our training sessions.

Also, knowing how the intervals sound like will help us to be able to correct our own singing, in the event that we sing slightly off pitch or out of tune.

We would be able to detect our tune problems, and correct them quickly and almost immediately so as not to cause our audience any hearing discomforts.

This is why, in the Vocal Mindset Tip above, a 5 minute performance on stage usually requires lots of hard work before hand, and of course, lots of practice too! ;-p
