Message from Your Personal Singing Coach:

“Welcome all fellow singers, vocal coaches and singing students!

The month of July is here, and it signifies that the 1st half of 2012 has come and gone.

I do hope that you have used these 6 months wisely, and that you have taken many steps towards achieving your life’s objectives and dreams.

Certainly for me, these few months are going to be hectic because of many school music projects as well as music related activities in Singapore.

One of my personal vocal students has also just been selected to undergo intensive vocal training in the hopes of becoming a singer / artiste, and I am busy giving him lots of support and guidance during this period of time.

But these are all worth it, because at the end of the day, I am doing my little part to improve the music scene in tiny little Singapore.

Hopefully, one day, the music from our tiny island will reach the shores of your countries, and when that day comes, don’t forget to drop me a note to let me know! ;-p

Once again, I would also like to ask that we ask our friends and family members to also join Your Personal Singing Guide’s Facebook Fan Page
(http://www.facebook.com/pages/Your-Personal-Singing-GuideCom/247342595295583)

and get your friends to join too!

Joining this Facebook Fan Page will enable us to build a strong online community, and also to interact with fellow lovers of music and singing, and have more fun together!

Do enjoy the tips that I am providing for you in this 37th issue of this Ezine, and feel free to share Your Personal Singing Ezine with your friends and loved ones, or better still, get them to come and subscribe to their very own Personal Singing Ezine! I will be glad to share my singing tips and pointers with them too!

If you wish to share with your friends the back-issues of our Ezine, feel free to do so too:

RESOURCE Webpage: Pitching Tips

A lot of people are lost when it comes to improving their own singing pitch.

The usual problems of singing off-key and not being able to sing the correct notes always seem to trouble them, and there seems to be no end to it.

This is why I have come up with my chapter on ‘Pitching Exercises’, and I would just like to guide you to a lesser seen webpage called ‘Pitching Tips’.

Here you will find some simple tips for pitching, and hopefully that will guide you one step towards improving your pitch when you sing.

If not, it should at least allow you to be able to know whenever you go off-key!

Check out these useful Pitching Tips now:

FOUNDATION Website: Voice Care

There can be no singing without a healthy voice.

I often find this to be so true, especially when I am suffering from a sore throat!

I do believe that the sore throat is a singer’s worst enemy, because we just can’t sing when our voice is not healthy and happy.

This chapter on Voice Care will help show you how to take good care of your voice, so that we can continue to sing with ease.

So, read this chapter now, and embark on a lifelong singing journey with a healthy voice!

Vocal Mindset Tip #5 – The Importance of Perseverance!

Just 5 minutes ago, I was playing the game ‘Sudoku’.

I personally find it a very challenging game, and I was actually introduced to it by my parents, because they love to play it during their free time.

It is a game that really tests your patience, determination and perseverance, and these qualities were put to the test a while ago during my own Sudoku challenge.

I spent almost 1 1/2 hours trying to solve the number puzzle and trying to fit all the numbers into the boxes given.

Luckily my perseverance paid off, and I managed to solve a puzzle of a really high level of difficulty (and I am really proud of myself)!

For those who aren’t really looking for something this challenging, check out the Basics of Singing below:

http://www.your-personal-singing-guide.com/basics-of-singing.html

Singing training is very much like playing Sudoku, in the sense that it tests your patience, determination and perseverance.

A lot of singers achieve lots of improvement during the first 1 or 2 years of their training, and they feel really great about themselves during this time.

However, when they reach their first plateau in their singing training and start to experience slower improvement in their vocal range or singing technique, they feel disappointed and dejected.

Some singers even begin to feel that they are not talented in singing and might even give up singing altogether.

My advice to all singers out there, is to keep practicing and keep pushing through that plateau.

You might find that, after 3-6 months of practicing on a problem area of your voice, you are suddenly able to sing notes that you were previously unable to sing!

This realization often comes out of the blue, and you might spend some time trying to understand what just happened.

I have personally gone through this phase of my singing training, and I am happy to say that I am still continuing to experience this even now!

I certainly do hope that every one of you singers out there will be able to keep up your perseverance, and keep working towards your singing goals.

Because one day, you will achieve them. Think, work hard, and you can achieve!

Pitching Tip #35 – Don’t Stress Out Over Your Pitch

Singing is a skill that involves superb multi-tasking skills.

You need to be able to produce good vocal sounds, hit the correct pitch and rhythm, listen to your own singing and be quick to react to any problems that may occur, and you need to also sing with feel and expression and flair!

If that isn’t multi-tasking, what is? ;-p

That being said, we certainly should not dwell particularly on any aspect of singing, and think so much about it as to be unable to sing in a relaxed and easy manner.

Now, check out some vocal warmup exercises that will allow us to achieve a relaxed singing voice:

http://www.your-personal-singing-guide.com/vocal-warmup.html

Now, what do I mean by ‘Don’t Stress Out Over Your Pitch’?

Sometimes when we sing, we try our best to sing the correct key and the exact pitches that we need to sing in order to produce a perfect performance.

Often times, we might go off key, and being the perfectionists that many singers are, we criticize and fault ourselves for not being able to hit every note exactly on pitch!

My advice would be, to not be over-bothered by the pitch when you sing, and not stress yourself too much each time you hear a note that is slightly off-key, or a word that is not sung in the correct pitch.

These things do happen from time to time, and they are what make a ‘live’ performance sound ‘LIVE’. :-)

Otherwise, the audience should just purchase your song or your CD to hear you perform pitch perfect renditions of your songs!

I have some students who cringe each time they hear a note that is just slightly off target, and I always tell them to chill out and just make sure the notes that are coming up are back to their usual standard!

Certainly, we would not expect you to sing totally off-key and torture the keen listening ears of your audience, but should you miss a note or two, it is certainly forgivable in the big picture of the entire performance.

What matters most is that the meaning and the feel of the song is conveyed to your audience, and they connect with you on an emotional and spiritual level.

That is the essence of singing, and that is what we should work towards.
