I am so sincerely apologetic for how late this Singing Ezine is in arriving! I have been so caught up with supporting my student Irwin in a reality singing competition in Singapore, and also with my regular work at my music school during this busy period of the year, that I only just realized that I had not sent you guys the Ezine for August. I have also been following the Olympics very closely, watching the swimmers, divers, gymnasts and also the table tennis players, that I must have forgotten all about sending you this Aug Ezine! Or perhaps it’s because Singapore won 2 medals this year at the Olympics, and that’s why I was too caught up in all that action! Anyhow, upon realizing it today, I have completed it and am sending it to you right now. I am also already working on the September issue, just to avoid any possibility of missing it out again. This August issue will focus on Self- Discovery and Self-Exploration. What do I mean by this? Do check out the articles in this Ezine to find out. I am actually down with a slight flu right now, but thank goodness it is only just a slight one and not a full blown illness. This gives me some time to really be by myself, and ponder about my work and also to think about my life journey so far. There have been times when I felt like giving up and not doing music anymore, but it is always when I read the comments that everyone sends me, that I really truly believe that I should continue my work in singing. So, please keep those comments and encouraging words coming in, and I will keep up my work in helping singers all around the world work on their singing skills! ;-p Once again, I would also like to ask that we ask our friends and family members to also join Your Personal Singing Guide’s Facebook Fan Page and get your friends to join too! RESOURCE Webpage: Vocal Warmup Many of my students downplay the importance of doing vocal warmups before they sing. In fact, I advocate that you should be warming your voice all throughout the day. Whether you be driving, or working, or just walking along the street, you should be doing your warmup exercises to keep your voice healthy and active. Only through this constant and repetitive practice throughout the day, every day, that we will improve on our singing voice and break new boundaries! Check out these useful Vocal Warmup Exercises now: http://www.your-personal-singing-guide.com/vocal-warmup.html FOUNDATION Website: Singing FAQ I set up the chapter on Singing FAQ to allow readers around the world to contribute and share their problems with other singers everywhere. My student has to stay at a specific location with 11 other finalists, and they undergo training provided by many music and singing professionals from the organizing company. Every week, at least 1 or 2 contestants get eliminated based on the scores from the judges, as well as their SMS voting ratings. At the end of the competition, the winner gets a 2 year contract with the artiste company that organized this competition. For those who wish to take part in your own singing competitions, check out the Singing Contest Tips below: http://www.your-personal-singing-guide.com/singing-contests.html Personally, I have never really been a fan of such singing competitions, especially when the SMS voting percentage takes up 70% of the total score. It certainly feels as though it is all a publicity gimmick, and that the telco is out to earn the money of those who support the contestants in this competition. However, because my student is involved this time, I have been totally involved and active in helping him to get people to vote for him, and also supporting him at all his competition rounds. One thing I have realized from being involved so far, is that there can never really be any competition that is truly and totally unbiased. Any company or organization which takes the effort to create and launch any singing competition will certainly be looking out for their own interests, and there will be a certain level of ‘unfairness’ and even accusations of ‘conspiracy’ and ‘underhandedness’. The very act of judging is in itself already a subjective act, because it all depends on the judges’ reactions to your singing, and also whether they like your singing or not. If they don’t, does it mean you are a bad singer? This made me reflect deeply on the meaning of competition, and I remember reading something about the sport of Golf and about Tiger Woods, and how he became No. 1 in the world for so long. People succeed because they choose to compete with themselves. They choose to upgrade their own skills, based on what they feel should be their own achievement and ability. If a person keeps complaining about any competition or result being unfair, he or she is just staying in that place and not progressing. The time spent complaining can be better used in practicing more or analyzing their own weaknesses more. That is the only way we can keep improving ourselves and keep excelling in what we do. So, the next time you feel like complaining about the results of a competition you took part in, or bitch about some organizer that is not treating contestants fairly, just think of my post here, and put it aside. Focus instead of working on your own singing skills, and one day, you will excel and you will be noticed! Read up more about Vocal Exercises that you can do to train up your voice: http://www.your-personal-singing-guide.com/vocal-exercises.html Vocal Tip #35 – Self Exploration is the Key to Self Improvement With a focus on the Self in mind, I would like to talk more about how we can do more self-exploration of our own voices in order to improve on our singing. This is something that we should be doing everyday, but a lot of times we don’t do it because we are afraid of producing strange noises, or just afraid of doing things that others might find weird or irritating. For those who wish to first work on their basic pitching for singing before moving on to more advanced techniques, please click below: http://www.your-personal-singing-guide.com/pitching-exercises.html Now, how do we do more self-exploration of our own voices? We can start off by producing sounds that we don’t usually do. For e.g, trying to mimic the sound of a cat (Meow) or a pigeon (Coo) or a cow (Moo). It sometimes amazes me how these simple voice experimentations are actually really important to help us to realize how we can add more variety to our singing voice. For e.g., mimicking the sound of a cat can help us to produce a brighter and sharper sound with very little air. Mimicking the sound of a cow can help us to practice our ‘Oooh’ vowel and also stimulates a low larynx position. Certainly, I am not asking you to start to imitate all the animals in the animal kingdom! I am asking you to open up your vocal experimentation and just try new sounds and new sensations. ;-p Another way in which we can do more self-exploration of our voices is to just talk in different tones and varying accents. In Singapore, we have the luxury of listening to many different accents everyday, due to the diverse races and cultures that co-exist here. So, in a single day, I may hear accents ranging from Chinese, British, French, German, Filipino, Indian, Japanese and more! If we are able to master all of these accents, we certainly will have a much more varied speaking voice, and our singing abilities will improve by leaps and bounds too. Certainly, our mastery of vocal tone will be much more advanced, since we are able to produce so many different and varying tones with our one single set of vocal folds! So, try out some of these techniques I listed here, and if your voice does not start sounding more colorful and interesting, email me and I will help you out further!
