Message from Your Personal Singing Coach:

“Welcome all fellow singers, vocal coaches and singing students!

This is officially our 20th issue since we started!!! Hooray!!

It has been a wonderful and surreal journey for me, and I receive lots of emails from everyone around the world, thanking for my singing tips, and also asking me many questions about singing.

I only hope that my advice has been helpful to them, and that I can continue to inspire more people to sing and enjoy music! That is the only reward that I need.

This 20th issue continues to dish out useful advice about singing, and the inspiration comes from the lessons that I conduct in Singapore everyday.

My students provide me with ideas and inspiration, and I communicate these ideas to you guys and gals all around the world, and hope that this knowledge will continue to spread and benefit more people!

I am also looking into doing instructional videos for everyone, but this has been difficult and I am having lots of trouble starting this project. But no worries, I will persevere and definitely will put this at the top of my priority list.

As usual, I ask for no monetary reward, and certainly am not charging any fees for the content on my website.

All I am asking is that you join Your Personal Singing Guide’s Facebook Group
(http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=161546608524&ref=ts

, and get your friends to join too. Help me to spread the word to everyone in the world, so that my website can begin to touch lives that I can’t even begin to imagine right now.

Do enjoy the tips that I am providing for you in this 20th issue of this Ezine, and feel free to share Your Personal Singing Ezine with your friends and loved ones, or better still, get them to come and subscribe to their very own Personal Singing Ezine! I will be glad to share my singing tips and pointers with them too!

If you wish to share with your friends the back-issues of our Ezine, feel free to do so too:

http://www.your-personal-singing-guide.com/Your_Personal_Singing_EZine-backissues.html

Also, if you feel that our website is really beneficial to you, please do let us know by dropping us an email through our Contact Us section on the website! Your comments will be greatly appreciated!”

Yours Sincerely,

Aaron Matthew Lim

UPDATED Website Section: Pitching Exercises

I have finally found some time to update the drills and exercises in this section, and you will find that I have added more music for everyone to use and practise!

This updated music can be found in the sections on ‘Major Scales’ and ‘Minor Scales’, and it consists of more practice music, ranging from a wider range of keys.

I will continue to find time to update more of the drills on the website, so that it can become more useful for everyone in your daily singing practice, so do keep checking back with our website to find out the latest updates!

The pitching exercises in this section are fairly simple and easy to use, and you can follow the instructions I have laid out in the relevant webpage. However, do be careful not to strain your voice, and also not to practise too hard and end up with a sore throat. The best guideline is that if your throat hurts, you are certainly doing something wrong, and you should stop immediately.

Ok, check out the section on Pitching Exercises now, and start off your singing education:

RESOURCE Website Section: Vocal Exercises

Vocal Exercises help us to discover more about our voice, and to understand, hear and feel how it works.

Through our exercises with our voice, we understand our limitations, and we also learn to break new boundaries and reach for greater heights!

Of course, these vocal exercises have to be done with utmost care, so that there is no vocal abuse or damage to our precious singing voice.

It is always best to do these exercises with a friend present, so that he or she can help to guide you in terms of what he or she hears and sees.

Ok, do check out the vocal exercises on my website now, and begin your learning experience:

Vocal Tip #22 – Resonance is Key

The one thing that all singers need to know about singing, is that it’s all about resonance. Seriously.

Resonance is KEY.

If we are unable to hit the proper resonance, we will find other ways to push our voices and make ourselves sound louder.

And this will include problematic ways like squeezing our throats, pushing hard on our diaphragm, increasing pressure on our tongue, and many more.

These usually come with side effects and cause bad habits in our singing. It also affects the long-term health of our voice.

Good resonance is produced by good vocal cord adduction, proper diaphragm support, clear voice passage, and utilization of correct vocal placement for singing.

Knowing how to produce a singing voice with proper resonance depends very much on your listening ability as well as your ability to appreciate the subtle differences in your singing voice.

When we sing, we have to try out different methods of voice production, and choose one that is most stress free, and yet is able to produce a bright and strong sound!

This is usually when we allow our voice to resonate in the ‘vocal mask’ area, or the area around our eyes and nose.

Humming usually helps us to feel our vocal resonance, and we need to be very aware of where our voice is when we hum, feeling it in our chest area, throat, mouth, nose, eyes, head area and more.

Of course, we also need to train our listening ability so that our ears are sharper and able to pick out subtle differences in tone and pitch.

Rhythm Tip #15 – Varying the Tempo When We Sing

When we practise our singing with a score and the music accompaniment, we sometimes stick too closely to what is written, and fail to realize one important thing.

Singers are also HUMAN.

And, we humans have a mind of our own, and we are free to do what we want to do in a way that we like.

The same rule applies to singing.

Yes, we need to follow the melody and rhythm of the song. However, this does not mean that we cannot vary the tempo or rhythm when we sing, as long as we are able to maintain the overall rhythmic integrity of the song.

In layman terms, as long as we are generally not too fast or too slow when we sing, it will be ok to change a few notes or a few beats to make the song sound better!

So, try varying the rhythm in a song that you sing. Perhaps for the 1st chorus, you might sing it in the proper or normal way.

But, for variety’s sake, maybe in the 2nd chorus you might wish to speed up some words or just tweak the rhythm in your own way.

This also adds in a human touch to the song, and turns it into your own rendition of the cover song!

It also shows the audience that you tried to do the song in your own way, and makes your performance more sincere and original.

To understand more about rhythm and some basic questions that students ask, check out this URL now:

Of course, we need to improve on our rhythmic sense in order to develop a more free and stable groove and beat when we sing!
