Rhythm Training Tip #2 – Training Your Body Rhythm Sense!

As a vocal instructor, I often encounter students with rhythm problems when singing. These students cannot seem to catch the proper beats, and also have problems knowing when to start singing and when to stop.

This is actually a singing problem related to our sense of rhythm, and can be strengthened by improving our body rhythm sense!

One effective way to do this is for us to clap the main beats whenever we sing our scale exercises during vocal warmups. For example, we can sing our warmups to a 4 beat rhythm, with each note being sung for 4 full beats. After each note, we would change our breath and then sing the next note in the scale.

For each note that we sing, we would clap 4 times in a steady fashion, following the main beats of the overall rhythm. This is because each note consists of 4 beats, so we would clap 4 times if we were clapping to the main beats in each note.

For those of us who wish to try this out at home, you can always practice using the pitching exercises provided on our website, and incorporate the clapping whenever you sing these exercises.

However, for these exercises uploaded on our website, you should clap only once or even twice quickly for each note in order to get the proper rhythm sense:

Pitching Exercises URL:

This method helps us to engage our body as well as train our coordination when we sing, because as we know, we need a good sense of rhythm in order to be able to sing to the beat of our songs!

Once we are able to clap to the beat in a steady and natural manner, we can then try to move in a side-to-side fashion, according to the rhythm of our song, or even according to the steady beat of a metronome.

This will help us to train our overall body rhythm, and keep us singing to the correct beat for all of our songs!

For those who wish to get some additional training resources to help you with your rhythm training, check out these useful Rhythm Ear Training Books:

Vocal Training Tip #6 – Scale Singing for Warming Up!

The 2nd tip in our special focus on musical scales is how we can warm up our voices by singing basic musical scales! These scales train our voices to be able to hit various pitches accurately, as well as to familiarise ourselves with the musical notes in a basic scale.

Scale training is an effective way to warm up because it utilizes various vowels in each of the solfege terms (Doh, Re, Mi, Fa, Sol, La, Ti, Doh) and teaches us to articulate each of these vowels properly so that our diction becomes clearer and well-practiced.

Whenever we do these scale singing warmups, we need to pay attention not only to our diction or pronunciation, but also to our voice stability for each note that we sing, making sure that each note in the scale is sung well and to the full duration that it is supposed to be sung.

This helps us to target our breathing, our vocal stability, our body rhythm, as well as our diction, all in ONE simple scale singing exercise!

Be sure to practice the scale singing exercises available on our website, and you will be able to target these basic aspects of your singing voice.

For those of us who wish to get some additional help with your vocal training, you can check out these effective singing books recommended by me, Your Personal Singing Coach.

Pitching Training Tip #4 – Pitch Jumps in a Major Scale!

The final tip in our special focus on musical scales is on how our basic scales can help us to manage and train our pitch jumps better, allowing us to sing more in tune for our songs!

The basic major scale is made up of the following notes:

Doh Re Mi Fa Sol La Ti High-Doh

We can actually sing these notes in a pitch-jump fashion, starting from the first note:

Doh-Re, Doh-Mi, Doh-Fa, Doh-Sol, Doh-La, Doh-Ti, Doh-High Doh

This will allow us to hit the various pitches in a major scale, and also train our voice to make increasingly larger pitch jumps as we move progressively up the major scale.

We can also sing these pitch jumps in succession, one after another, so that we train our voice to react quickly to pitch jumps, and still be able to hit the pitches accurately!

If you notice, these are also the 7 basic major intervals that I have talked about on our website! These intervals are extremely useful in helping us to train our pitching sense, and also help us to sing more in tune.
