It is with great happiness and joy that I welcome the month of September, as it means that the end of the year is coming and it will soon be time to start planning for next year’s activities. In Singapore, we celebrate Teacher’s Day on 1st September, and I would just like to take this opportunity to wish all teachers around the world a very ‘Happy Teachers’ Day’! Teaching is a very tough occupation, and as a teacher myself, I know the sacrifices we put in for students who don’t even realize it until much later on. Just like to tell all teachers to keep going, and don’t ever give up! ;-p With regards to the singing competition that my student is participating in, I am glad to announce that he is in the Top 5 placing, and that the competition will all be over in just 2-3 weeks’ time. I can only hope that he will have gained enough experience and contacts to make his own career in the music industry, and I look forward to seeing him very soon. As his teacher, all I can do is vote for him, and garner votes for him, and spread his achievements wide and far so that more people hear his name and become his fans. ;-p If I can produce just this one successful artiste of a student, I would know that my efforts over the past few years have finally paid off! Once again, I would also like to ask that we ask our friends and family members to also join Your Personal Singing Guide’s Facebook Fan Page and get your friends to join too! RESOURCE Webpage: Breath Exercises It should come as no surprise if I were to say that breath is very important for singing. In fact, it forms the foundation of your singing voice, and certainly is no less important than your vocal folds in the production of your voice. Without breath, there will be no voice. There might be some sounds, but there will certainly be no sustained vocal tone. Master some basic breathing exercises so that you learn how to control your breathing and breathe according to what you need for your song. The key here is control and knowing how much breath to use when you sing. Check out these useful Breathing Exercises now: http://www.your-personal-singing-guide.com/breathing-exercises.html FOUNDATION Website: Basics of Singing The basics of singing may not be the most exciting things we want to learn in a singing class, but they are important for our singing education. Ignore the basics of whatever you learn, and you are sure to fail and not progress. Having a good foundation in the basics of singing is similar to having a good foundation for a building, or having a good base for a cheesecake. ;-p So what are you waiting for? Start building on those basics now: http://www.your-personal-singing-guide.com/basics-of-singing.html COMMUNICATE with Your Personal Singing Coach! Click on the link below to send us your comments and feedback! http://www.your-personal-singing-guide.com/contact-us.html Vocal Mindset Tip #7 – Improvement Sometimes Involves Complete Change I have taught many students over the 10 years that I have been teaching. One point stands common amongst all of them, and that is the resistance to change. Sometimes, it takes total and complete change in order to achieve the voice you want. And students just aren’t willing to accept it. For those who are willing and ready to accept change, start by working on your voice now: http://www.your-personal-singing-guide.com/vocal-warmup.html What do I mean by total and complete change? By this, I mean change in your daily habits, change in the way you usually sing, and change in how you talk too. Firstly, how can we change our daily habits? We can do this by instilling the habit of practice into our daily routine. Practise for short durations each time, but OFTEN, throughout the day. This is the only way we are going to transform our voice. To make it the routine voice that we use throughout the day, and not as a SEPARATE voice we use for singing. Otherwise, what we practice in our singing lessons will always remain in singing class, and will never become the voice that we use to sing naturally each time we open our mouth. Secondly, what do I mean by ‘change in the way we usually sing’? I mean, change our singing habits. Analyze how we are singing right now, and tell ourselves what we want to change and what we want to keep. Then, practice daily and often to instill new singing habits. Sometimes this involves trying out tones that we are not familiar with, or that we have never vocalized before. Be brave, and try them out (safely). Just don’t resist change, and don’t think that by doing things in the same way you will get different results. Because that will never happen. You need to effect change in order to achieve change! Thirdly, why would we change the way we talk? If our singing practice is often enough, the voice that we use to sing will gradually become the voice that we use to speak. And vice versa. It becomes something that is natural to us, just like how we breathe or how we react to things. It becomes a NEW habit. A lot of my students think that just by taking singing lessons once a week, we teachers can perform miracles. Well, we can’t. You need to practice. And be the change that you want to achieve. There is no short cut or no miracle method of training. It takes hard work and determination to get the voice that you want! So, start working now ;-p Read up more about Vocal Exercises that you can do to train up your voice: http://www.your-personal-singing-guide.com/vocal-exercises.html Pitching Tip #36 – Tones, Semitones and Minitones I’d just like to share with everyone a point on pitching that one of my students raise during class today, which I thought is rather meaningful. He asked me whether, when people sing off key, that it’s because they are singing the wrong tones or semitones with regards to the pitch that they are supposed to sing. For those who wish to first work on their basic pitching for singing before moving on to more advanced techniques, please click below: http://www.your-personal-singing-guide.com/pitching-exercises.html I told him that the world is not just divided into tones and semitones. ;-p There are also half semitones, or mini tones, or even micro tones that are so small that it is difficult to hear and differentiate them. I demonstrated some of these mini tones and microtones, and my students were able to only barely detect the differences in these tones. It then struck me that what I took for granted was actually something that they did not realize. That whenever we sing slightly sharp or slightly flat, we might actually be singing just a microtone too high or too low, and that causes us to cringe or feel strange when we listen to our singing. And knowing how to listen out for these differences in tone is one of the most important parts of our singing training. This is why ear training is absolutely vital as a skill that ALL singers should have! And this is also why it is quite rare for a singer to be able to sing in perfect pitch every time he or she performs. Of course, the pitching exercises on my website are a good way to start, because knowing the tones and semitones in our scales is certainly the first step towards better pitching. But our ears also have to be more sensitive to the mini tones or micro tones so as to be able to tell the difference between the various pitches. This will give us a whole new spectrum in our listening ability!
