Message from Your Personal Singing Coach:

“Welcome all fellow singers, vocal coaches and singing students!

To all the children in Singapore and all over the world, Happy Children’s Day!! ;-p

It is a month to celebrate the innocence of the children of the world, and also to cultivate the musical and singing talents of our children and youth, so that we can create a more musical world!

This issue of Your Personal Singing Ezine is our 40th issue, and I would like to thank everyone for your kind support that has helped to bring us to 40 wonderful issues.

This month is an exciting month for me, because I am personally involved in a charity music project in Singapore, and news about it will be released in the coming weeks.

It certainly is a meaningful project and I am very glad to be part of it. Hopefully there will be many more music projects that I can be involved in during the near future!

I will also be preparing my students for their annual carolling at various locations in Singapore, and it will be a busy and exciting month for me!

Hope that everyone is also starting to get into the Christmas mood, or at least the Halloween mood? ;-p

Once again, I would also like to ask that we ask our friends and family members to also join Your Personal Singing Guide’s Facebook Fan Page

and get your friends to join too!

Joining this Facebook Fan Page will enable us to build a strong online community, and also to interact with fellow lovers of music and singing, and have more fun together!

Do enjoy the tips that I am providing for you in this 40th issue of this Ezine, and feel free to share Your Personal Singing Ezine with your friends and loved ones, or better still, get them to come and subscribe to their very own Personal Singing Ezine! I will be glad to share my singing tips and pointers with them too!

If you wish to share with your friends the back-issues of our Ezine, feel free to do so too:

Also, if you feel that our website is really beneficial to you, please do let us know by dropping us an email through our Contact Us section on the website! Your comments will be greatly appreciated!”

FOUNDATION Website: Basics of Singing

The basics of singing may not be the most exciting things we want to learn in a singing class, but they are important for our singing education.

Ignore the basics of whatever you learn, and you are sure to fail and not progress.

Having a good foundation in the basics of singing is similar to having a good foundation for a building, or having a good base for a cheesecake. ;-p

So what are you waiting for? Start building on those basics now:

Vocal Mindset Tip #8 – Singing from the Heart

I just attended a sharing session by vocal coach and author, Amanda Colliver, held at Playden at the Arts House, Singapore.

Amanda Colliver is a renowned vocal coach who has taught singers and performers like Nicole Kidman, Hugh Jackman and many many more!!

It was certainly an honour to be in her presence, and to listen to her share about her new book, ‘Can Anybody Sing?’, and also talk about her vocal methodology.

For those who wish to find out more about Amanda Colliver, do visit the URL here:

I was struck by her holistic outlook on singing, and how she really believes in working on the problems of singing from the inside. Getting her students to open up their feelings and their hearts, and just start exploring!

It was great to hear her talk about singing, and she mentioned a comment about singing from the heart, and how this will be able to evoke emotion in a singing voice because it comes from deep within.

This comment struck me as being very true, because a lot of times we hear singers who are really technically proficient and have ‘perfect’ sounding voices.

However, after listening to their voices, we are only left in awe of their technique, but not necessarily touched by their voices.

In essence, the message of their song has not been deeply etched in our souls! This, I feel, is what a singer should aim to do. To change people from deep within.

And this is why I would agree with Amanda when she said that she would prefer an imperfect but emotive voice, as compared to a voice with perfect and beautiful technique.

Because the imperfect voice may be able to convey certain emotions that a perfect technical voice might never be able to convey.

It is also why I am reading her book late at night, and hoping to gain more insight into her vocal methodology!

Certainly, technical training will help us in our singing journeys, but ultimately, it is the ability to change lives with our voices, that drives us to be singers in the first place.

Pitching Tip #37 – Pitching Accurately in a Recording Studio

A lot of times, we find that it is hard to pitch accurately when we are singing in a recording studio.

This is especially so if we are asked to sing harmony or backing vocals, or even just to sing our own vocal part with a chorus of other singers.

For those who wish to tackle their basic pitching problems first, check out the URL below:

A lot of times, our pitching problems are linked to our listening ability – whether we are able to hear ourselves when we sing.

Sometimes when we are recording, we might find that when we sing into the microphone, we can barely hear our voice while the music is playing.

This will create problems in our pitching because we are unable to hear ourselves properly, and thus pitch rather inaccurately and randomly based on what we can hear in our head.

However, when we sing like this, it is akin to singing while we are listening to music on our iPods or mp3 players. We sing grossly out of tune!

This is one of the reasons why some singers choose to sing with only one ear covered by the headphones, and the other ear exposed.

The exposed ear allows the singer to listen to their own singing, without that much interruption from the music or vocals that are heard in the headphones.

Most of the time, this helps to improve the pitching of the singer, especially when singing harmony vocal parts (because this requires more listening and focus).

So, the next time you find that you are singing out of tune when recording in a studio, try to make sure that you can hear your voice while you are recording.

Turn down the music if you find that you can only hear the music and not your voice, because that will certainly affect your ability to listen to your own pitching while singing.

Reduce the number of voices that you hear in the headphones, if you find that when you are singing with a chorus of singers, you just can’t hear your own voice while recording.

Listen to the music with just one side of the headphones, if this helps by exposing one ear to the outside world, allowing you to monitor your singing directly with your exposed ear.
