Choosing Good Music Schools
for your Singing Training!
So many music schools.. so little time.. ;-p
Voice training is a growing industry, with so many singing competitions and contests in the world today! I am sure that in your country, there are Idol competitions and other local singing events and contests that you can take part in. This has also sparked off greater interest in singing, songwriting and music in general.
With the great number of schools offering courses in singing and music, how do we select one that can provide us what we need as a student, and develop our talent to the fullest?
Here are some tips to do just that:
Tip # 1: Check out the credentials of the music schools and its directors and instructors
It is always important to know more about the school that you are interested to join, so that you will have more confidence and believe that the time you spend there will not be in vain.
Do some background research on the school and how long it has been established. This will be an indication of its stability and also its reputation and standing in the industry. You certainly would not want to invest your hard-earned money in a school, only to find out the next day that the entire school has disappeared from the face of the earth!
Also, do check out more information about the directors and their credentials. Do they have a business background, or are they more of musicians? This will affect how the school is run and also the vision of the business too.
In my case, my school – Intune Music School – has been around for the past 4 – 5 years, and me and my business partner have been in the music education industry for the past 10 years or so. This is why with our experience, we are able to provide great music programmes for our students and clients!
It has certainly become a lifelong passion for me, with my music school, this website, my artiste profile and performances, as well as the community and friends in music that I have met and gotten to know over the past decade or so. ;-p
Tip # 2: Check out the connections that the school has in the music industry
This depends on the focus of the music school in question. Some schools focus more on developing the next big STAR, and so they would have more connections with artiste management companies, record companies and recording studios too.
These are also probably the schools with their own music publishing house or if not, they would at least have connections with big publishing houses in the industry. This is so that their students will be able to send in their songs to these houses and compete for a slot in the next recording album for various artistes.
Other schools focus more on developing performers, just like my school does, and they would have more connections with performance venues like cafes, concert halls, theatres or even prestigious arts venues in the country. This will allow the school to be able to organise concerts and shows for their student performers, to give them more exposure and build up their confidence onstage!
Again, using my school as an example, we have been running concerts quite frequently at a prestigious arts venue in Singapore called The Arts House, which focusses on featuring local musicians and artistes, and giving them a chance to showcase their works and their talents!
Do check out some of the performance videos of me and my studentsperforming at the Arts House and various locations in Singapore!
There are also other schools that cater to the mature adults and offer courses in evergreen songs! These are mainly for students who are only looking to sing for leisure and to spend their retirement days doing something that they love, and also to meet new friends and to catch up with old friends too!
Tip # 3: Find out what kind of courses the school offers, and who are the instructors teaching the courses
Knowing what courses the school offers will give you a good idea of the strengths of that school. For example, some music schools offer more courses in singing, whereas other schools offer more programmes in songwriting, audio engineering and more.
You would also do well to find out more about the instructors teaching the relevant courses, and to find out more about their credentials. Check out my website section on ‘Choosing a Good Singing Coach or Music Instructor’ to find out more about how to do just that!
If you wish to find out more about me as a music instructor and singing coach, you can also click on the relevant link to check this out!
Of course, once you have found out the strengths of the schools you are considering, you would want to choose the school that is able to offer you the course that you want, and is also known to be strong in that aspect of the music industry.
This will allow you to get a headstart over others in terms of music education, and also to be more focussed in your training and to achieve the results that you want!
Ok, hope these tips are useful to you when you are deciding which music school to join. Once you have decided, it is best to stay at the school for at least 6 months to 1 year, in order to fully experience what the school can offer you, and also to get a fuller learning experience in music and in singing!
