Message from Your Personal Singing Coach:
“Welcome all fellow singers, vocal coaches and singing students!
It is with a heavy heart that we bid goodbye to a great singer, Whitney Houston.
I am personally a huge fan of Whitney’s, and I love all the songs that she sung, including ‘I Will Always Love You’ and ‘Greatest Love of All’.
She just has such a special voice and presence on stage, but I guess all gifted and talented people have their insecurities and personal problems.
We can only hope and pray that there will be other singers like Whitney who can influence a generation and inspire billions around the world just like her.
Our website is experiencing slightly lower readership than previous months, but I believe that we will still continue to inspire singers around the world to improve their craft.
With every passing day, we can only do our best and hope that it is enough to achieve our dreams!
I have also introduced a new category of singing tips called the ‘Vocal Mindset Tips’, and these focus on strengthening the mind when we are training our voice, as it is very important that we are in the right mindset when we practise!
Hopefully these tips will be useful to you and will help you to overcome the mental barriers that may stop you from achieving your desired voice.

Vocal Mindset Tip #1 – Thinking You Know Everything is the Greatest Obstacle to Vocal Improvement
This post is inspired by a young boy whom I met recently, and whom I taught for just 1 lesson.
When he came in for the trial lesson, he was already full of what he thought was knowledge about singing.
His mind was full of ideas about head voice, chest voice, and how it should sound like, and what he should be doing, and how he should be singing.
It made me wonder why he was here for the lesson in the 1st place, because he seemed to already know everything. ;-p
(For those who would like to start from the basics, check out the Basics of Singing below:)
http://www.your-personal-singing-guide.com/basics-of-singing.html
I tried to teach him what I knew, and tried to relate to his classical singing background (2 years, but a long time ago), and explain the pop style of singing to him.
However, it was difficult because each time I tried to teach him something new or different, he would question it and comment that it was something ‘interesting’ and not say anything more about it.
But, I could see in his eyes that he did not really understand or even believe in what I was teaching him.
Personally, I feel that the art of Singing is really a very wide ranging and unfathomable mass of knowledge that we can probably never get around to understanding totally.
This is especially since the vocal folds are in our throat, and it is so difficult to gather any scientific data from them without putting probes down the throat, and electrodes on our vocal folds!
We can only base our teaching on what we hear and see, and also how the student feels, and guide the student as they go along.
But the student must always be open to new teachings, because you never know when you might stumble upon something that can liberate your voice.
Or, you never know that what you have been learning for the past 5 – 10 years, could possibly be the ‘wrong’ thing, and the reason why you have not improved over the years!
So, I would like to sincerely remind all singers out there, to keep an OPEN MIND, and be RECEPTIVE to GOOD ADVICE.
Incidentally, the young boy is now having lessons at my school, so I do wish that he can open up his mind and take in new knowledge! ;-p

Pitching Tip #31 – Know Your Pitches By Hearing
I would just like to elaborate more about what we mean by knowing our pitches, and how we can improve on our pitching ability when singing.
This is especially important for those who think they are tone deaf, or those who just seem to ‘float’ off key now and then.
Now, how should we even begin to learn how to know our pitches by hearing?
One way, which is taught in some music schools in Singapore, is for students to memorize the sound and pitch of a ‘C’ note on the piano, and then relate all other notes to that note.
For example, if the student memorizes the sound of the ‘C’ note, when the teacher plays an ‘E’ note, the student is able to compare this note to the C note, and deduce that it is an ‘E’ note.
Of course, this would mean that the student has to have a good ear, and also good knowledge about intervals, in order to be able to relate this knowledge and come up with the correct answer.
However, for mere mortals like most of us, the above method is probably TOO difficult!
We might try another method, which is to learn how to sing a basic Major Scale in any key that we start on.
For example, if I play a C note, then I would sing a Major scale from that C note.
I don’t necessarily have to know what notes I am singing, but I have to make sure that I am singing a Major scale, by listening to the pitches I sing and relating them to the sound of a Major Scale.
For those of us who have forgotten what a major scale sounds like, check out the URL below:
http://www.your-personal-singing-guide.com/major-scales.html
When doing this method, make sure you also try to visualize what a Major scale looks like, and visualize the note on the piano keys when you are singing the scale.
This helps to reinforce your learning, and also gives you something to refer to in your mind, so that when you think of the note, you can sing the sound more accurately.
Try it and let me know if it works! ;-p
