Message from Your Personal Singing Coach:
“Welcome all fellow singers, vocal coaches and singing students!
I apologize for the late ezine, as I was held up with a major music event here in Singapore.
Our school was organizing a solo piano recital for renowned Japanese pianist, Ms. Chisato Kusunoki, and she was here in July to hold her 2 piano recitals on 12 July and 15 July, at the LASALLE College of the Arts.
The event was very well received, and I certainly look forward to the next time that she will be coming to Singapore to perform!
I am also preparing for a mini concert on 6 August in Singapore, with some of my friends in music, and that has also taken up much of my time this month. But certainly, I am making sure that you receive your copy of this Ezine, so that I don’t let down any of you out there!
This month has been a roller coaster ride for me, filled with many heartaches and problematic issues to overcome, but I’m glad to say that things are looking up, and it can only get better!
I certainly hope that your lives are great too, and that you continue to spread your love for music and singing to your friends and companions. ;-p
I would like to continue to ask that you get more friends to join Your Personal Singing Guide’s Facebook Group
(http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=161546608524&ref=ts)
, and get your friends to join too. Help me to spread the word to everyone in the world, so that my website can begin to touch lives that I can’t even begin to imagine right now!
Do enjoy the tips that I am providing for you in this 26th issue of this Ezine, and feel free to share Your Personal Singing Ezine with your friends and loved ones, or better still, get them to come and subscribe to their very own Personal Singing Ezine! I will be glad to share my singing tips and pointers with them too!
If you wish to share with your friends the back-issues of our Ezine, feel free to do so too:

RESOURCE Webpage: Good Singing Foods
This is a great resource webpage because you get to know about some of the good foods that you can take to keep your voices healthy.
And of course, it does wonders for your overall personal health as well.
As singers, we need to keep ourselves healthy at all times, because the slightest cough or flu or fever will certainly affect the way we sing or perform.
So, keep living healthily, and stay away from drugs, alcohol and smoke, and you’ll be fine!

FOUNDATION Website: Basics of Singing
Let’s get back to the basics, shall we?
I’m sure many of our singing friends have found that even after singing for a long time, there are some basics that we love to revisit, and when we do that, we learn even more because of our deeper understanding of what singing is all about.
A friend of mine recently attended a certain voice workshop for the 3rd time, and she was impressed by the amount of knowledge that she absorbed this time round! This was because she knew what she was looking for, and she knew better how the voice actually works.
Here’s hoping that we can all revisit these singing basics from time to time, and explore those topics that we might be lacking or need more training in.
Enjoy the learning process!!

Vocal Tip #29 – Concentration and Effort – The 2 Keys to Better Singing!
Many people have asked me whether singing takes effort. They tell me that many singers make it look so effortless and easy!
My answer to them is, Singing takes both Concentration and Effort. 2 major important keys to better singing.
Concentration refers to Focus. We have to concentrate on our song and our voice when we sing, and also focus on the emotions and the feel that we want to project in our singing.
When we listen to singers perform, we can tell if the singer is concentrating on the song they are performing, or if their mind is somewhere else.
The signs of concentration can be found either in the vocal control, or in the facial or body movements, as well as the eye contact and expression.
We also need concentration when we sing, because we need to adjust our voices and our pitch as and when we go slightly out of what we are supposed to be singing.
If we are not fully focussed, we might sing off key and not realize it, and our audiences would cringe in horror…
Check out the URL below if you wish to read about pitching exercises and how to avoid pitching mistakes:

The 2nd key, Effort, is also vital for a great singing voice and performance.
There is a famous Chinese saying amongst the performing arts circle: “We may be onstage for a mere 10 minutes, but it takes 10 years of preparatory foundational work before we are ready for this moment.” (My own translation from Mandarin to English)
I feel that this saying is so true, because many people do not see how much effort singers put into our craft, with regards to our foundational singing training, our musical education, and also constantly upgrading ourselves with new music genres, new ways of singing, new singers and styles.
Constantly exploring the boundaries of our singing voice is also one of the ways we can put in effort, and push our singing to greater heights.
Our voice also responds only to constant incessant effort in training, making certain singing habits ingrained so that we do not need to think about them when we actually sing.
Learn more about the various vocal warmups we can do to train our voice:

I sincerely hope that you will be able to apply these 2 keys to better singing – Concentration and Effort – and achieve a great singing voice!

Pitching Tip #25 – A Trick that I Learnt from One of our Vocal Instructors
Remember the vocal instructor whom I was talking about sometime back in one of the previous Ezine issues, having the student with the tone problems?
Well, I’m glad to say that he discovered a neat trick to get his student to sing on-key, and I would like to share this with everyone here.
Check out the URL below for some listening exercises that tone-challenged singers can practise with:
Ear Training URL:
http://www.your-personal-singing-guide.com/ear-training.html
What the instructor did was to link numbers with pitch, and ‘trick’ his student into singing higher as numbers got bigger.
Instinctively, our mind has been trained to understand numbers, and to know whether numbers are getting bigger or smaller, just by thinking of them.
My friend, the vocal instructor, got his student to sing these numbers out in various pitches of the major scale.
Meaning, he related the number ’1′ with the first note in the major scale ‘Doh’. And the second number ’2′ with the second note ‘Re’. And so on.
This meant that the student was now able to understand how low pitches and high pitches sound, just by relating them to the numbers getting bigger or smaller!
It sounds simple, but it really is a neat trick, because now the student processes these notes and pitches with the numbers that he understands well, and he has a guideline to judge these pitches by.
Also, with more practice over time, the brain naturally learns how low pitches and high pitches sound, and the student can also visualize these pitches based on whether their numbers or high or low, and this creates new relationships and new neural pathways in the brain!
Those of you who are tone-challenged, try this neat trick and see if it works! Let me know ya! ;-p
